Symptom: The top of the dashboard gets tacky, gooey, or very shiny. In sunlight it reflects onto the windshield and makes it hard to see. It may also crack.
Likely causes
- The material breaks down. Toyota acknowledged that heat, humidity, and sunlight damage the dash surface. It covered replacements under program ZE6 for 2007–2011 Camrys, and program ZJA added certain 2010–2011 cars.
- Glare is the part that affects safety.
Cost
These programs have ended. Toyota Nation owners report that replacements were free while the programs ran. Today, a dash cover is the cheap fix. A used dash in good condition costs much more.
DIY or shop?
- DIY: a fitted dash cover.
- Shop: replacing the whole dash, which takes a lot of labor and means working around the airbag.
Useful steps
- Ask a Toyota dealer to check your VIN. Goodwill coverage is sometimes granted.
- Avoid harsh cleaners, which make it stickier.
- Use a matte dash cover to cut glare on the windshield.
Vehicle focus: 2007–2011 Toyota Camry.
Safety / mechanic note
Glare on the windshield makes it harder to see the road. Removing the dash means working near the passenger airbag, so leave that to a mechanic.
