Symptom: The engine cranks but won't start, or starts and dies a few seconds later. It may then start fine later. Other strange electrical behavior is possible.
Likely causes
- The TIPM fuel pump relay. The relay is built into the Totally Integrated Power Module's circuit board. When it fails, the pump never turns on. RamForum owners work through whether it's the pump or the TIPM.
- The fuel pump itself.
How owners tell the difference
- Listen for the pump's 2-second hum when you turn the key to run.
- Check fuel pressure at the rail.
- If the pump runs when powered directly, the TIPM relay is the suspect.
DIY or shop?
External relay bypass kits are a common DIY fix. A TIPM replacement may need programming at a shop.
Useful steps
- Do the key-on listen test.
- Check the fuel pressure.
- Then decide between the relay bypass, TIPM, and pump.
