Symptom: A knocking that rises with engine speed, a flashing check-engine light with the car in limp mode, oil consumption, or the engine seizing while you drive.
Likely causes
- Rod bearing wear. Kia recalled engines with machining defects and added knock-detection (KSDS) software. KSDS spots early bearing knock and puts the car into limp mode. Kia pairs the update with extended engine coverage if maintenance is up to date.
- Oil starvation, either from the 2011–2012 oil pan leak recall or from simply running low on oil.
- Failures outside coverage. Kia Forum has threads from owners who were denied coverage, usually because of missing maintenance records.
Cost
Free under the recall or campaign coverage. Outside coverage, expect an engine replacement. Keep every oil change receipt.

Useful steps
- Check your VIN for recalls and confirm the KSDS update is installed.
- If the check-engine light flashes and the car goes into limp mode, stop and have it towed to a Kia dealer.
- Keep your oil change records, since coverage depends on them.
Vehicle focus: 2011–2019 Kia Sportage.
Safety / mechanic note
A seized engine can lose power suddenly, and engine fires have been reported on related Kia and Hyundai engines. Verify with a mechanic if you hear knocking or smell burning.
