Symptom: The oil level on the dipstick reads above full and keeps climbing between changes, and the oil smells like gasoline. In cold climates, you may also get misfire codes, rough running, or a whirling noise.

Likely causes

  1. Fuel in the oil. On short trips in cold weather, the direct-injected 1.5 turbo doesn't get hot enough to boil off fuel that slips past the rings. Honda's fix was new ECU/TCU software, plus an A/C control change that helps the engine warm up faster. Honda also extended coverage on related engine parts.
  2. Long oil change intervals let the fuel build up.
  3. Overfill. Rule out too much oil from the last service.

Cost

The software update was free. The warranty extension covered the camshaft, rocker arms, and spark plugs for 6 years from the original sale date with unlimited miles, so most cars are now past it. Check your VIN anyway.

DIY or shop?

  • DIY: check the oil weekly, smell it for fuel, and change it more often in winter.
  • Shop: confirm the update is done and diagnose any misfire codes.

Useful steps

  1. Ask a Honda dealer whether your VIN shows the oil-dilution update as completed.
  2. Take longer drives in winter when you can, and change the oil more often.
  3. If the level keeps rising after the update, write it down and report it to Honda.

Safety / mechanic note

Heavy fuel dilution thins the oil and can damage the engine's bearings. Get misfires or a strong fuel smell checked.
